Ram Ramifications

4 Oct

1Corinthians 10:27-28 “If an unbeliever invites you to a meal and you decide to go, eat what is set before you, without asking any questions because of your conscience. But if someone tells you, “This food was offered to idols,” then do not eat that food, for the sake of the one who told you and for conscience’ sake “

I took selfies with the rams, careful that the ropes that bound them to the clothesline rod was properly secured. I asked Hafiz and Ismail to pose alongside the rams also, and they were more relaxed, touching the horns, and stroking the dirty white beard patch of the animals. Hafiz suggested we have a ram battle which was my cue to walk away.

There were about eight rams scattered around the compound belonging to the three Muslim families that lived there. My family was the only non-Muslim one. On Muslim public holidays and Muslim celebrations, we became sort of like that student whom nobody comes to visit during visiting days and everyone pities and gives part of their food too. They would all rally with food and drinks and meat to our apartment trying to outdo each other. Continue reading

Jehovah Sharp Sharp

Ecclesiastes 3:1 “There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens:”

The three of us got to the door at the same time. We looked at each other, assessing each other, mentally judging whether the other two had been up to better good.

Saida had several books under her arm and I could see the ink stains on her palms and her library card peeking out just so from one of the books. I shook my head. She just wanted us to know she had been in the library since morning when I could see the grid marks on her right cheek that looked suspiciously like the cover of one of the books she was holding. Company Sticker

Zechariah 4:10 “Do not despise these small beginnings, for the Lord rejoices to see the work begin, to see the plumb line in Zerubbabel’s hand.”

Usman drove his new car to the mallam’s kiosk by the junction; he made it a point to stop and greet everyone on the street. When they did not hear him, he honked till he got their attention. And then he put his elbow out the window and leaned out lightly to make small talk. He hoped they could see company sticker on his windscreen. The Chevron red and blue sticker. When it seemed they hadn’t seen it, he called their attention to it. Continue reading

Driver’s Lurgy

6 Sep

Ephesians 6:5 “ Servants, be obedient unto them that according to the flesh are your masters, with fear and trembling, in singleness of your heart, as unto Christ”

Mr. Ahmed’s driving was like a silent protest, he barely pressed the accelerator and allowed all the cars to go before him. I did not realize what he was doing until I looked up from my laptop and saw we were moving at the same space as a vehicle with a Learner tag on its back beside us.

“Mr. Ahmed, I have no plans on sleeping on this road, please move.”

“But Madame, it was you that said I should slow down, I am only doing as you said.” He replied in a fake humble voice.

“Slow down not crawl. Speed it up a little.” Our gaze met in the rear-view mirror and he accelerated the car. Continue reading

1 Cor 5: 12 “It isn’t my responsibility to judge outsiders, but it certainly is your responsibility to judge those inside the church who are sinning.”

I was glad when Belema finally put to bed and pushed out the product of her and Damilola’s coupling into the world. Those last six months of her pregnancy had been trying for everybody. She could not do anything without calling someone to assist her, as though her pregnancy was an ailment that made her bedridden.

“Is the child fine?”

“Of course he’s fine. All babies are beautiful.”

I looked at my naïve mother, “some babies are not fine. Can’t you remember Maureen’s daughter, with her big head, and wrinkles all over her as if….” Continue reading

Gas Cooker

Proverbs 1:8 “Hear, my son, your father’s instruction, and forsake not your mother’s teaching

When the new gas cooker came in a plain see-through nylon, I was a little disappointed. I thought it would have come in those white squiggly things and the measles covered nylon I loved to pop. The men who carried it in plunked it on the new counter and connected it to a cylinder outside. The walls of the kitchen had been repainted, covering the layers of black stains the kerosene stove had put on the walls over the years. Continue reading

Psalm 37: 21 “The wicked borroweth, and payeth not again: but the righteous sheweth mercy, and giveth.”

I went through my facebook pictures, deleting uncool embarrassing pictures I took from years back. I wondered what had possessed me into twisting my body into ridiculous shapes and capturing them forever on lens.

“These your pictures are ugly though” Iseoma said chewing loudly in my ear. I turned in disgust, “don’t talk while chewing my friend.”

“Sorry” she said and chewed louder showing me what pieces of Frosties looked like when they had been masticated properly. Continue reading

Secret Admirer

Romans 8:28 “And we know that for those who love God, all things work together for good for those who are called according to his purpose.”

Dear Nancy
I really like you. I know its strange to find this note in your the gods are not to blame, but it’s your favorite book. I know since I watch you read bits of it during lunch. Why do you eat lunch in class? And you don’t speak so much. I like hearing you talk. I think you’re amazing

“Is this not too much?” Ralia asked leaning over my shoulder to read.

“I dunno. Is it?”

She collected the paper and showed Priye to read.

The Thin Line

Matthew 15:7-9 “You hypocrites! Well did Isaiah prophesy of you, when he said: “‘This people honors me with their lips, but their heart is far from me; in vain do they worship me, teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.”

“Let us pray” Irene said clasping her hands together. She gave a short benediction, requesting God to bless the meeting and take control. Demanding that he answer our prayers. She ended with a plea for mercy for all hidden sins that could forestall our answers; she cursed the Prince of Persia desperately. Continue reading
